Some of us are the type to want to wait before purchasing a game that has been released. Sure, you have to rely on the reviews and how popular it is to see if it’s actually something that’s worth it, but sometimes that isn’t really as reliable as you would think. People’s opinions differ and sometimes, you find that you actually don’t like the game while everyone else is just praising it to the stars and back.
This is why walkthroughs come in and why they have become famous. Sure, you’re there for the personality too and the reactions you would get from the person on the videos, but most of all, you get to experience the game without actually playing it yourself. And while this might seem boring to other people. For those who rely on them to see if a game is worth it, it’s important.
There are a bunch of things that make this an awful idea though.
Frustration against the player and his or her decisions
Whether the walkthrough is playing an online battle royal, a story-based game or even just basically digging for diamonds in Minecraft, if there is one single wrong thing that the player does wrong, it frustrates you and everyone else watching. You are supposed to be watching a relaxing video to test out a game you are interested to buy, but then it would turn into a bad time if he or she messes up. Not really mature of us, sure, but can you blame the rest of us? However on the other hand, you would be more inclined to buy the game afterwards, only because you wanted to scratch the itch that the player left behind and do it yourself, but better.
If a game is especially a good one, this cannot be helped. If you are watching a walkthrough and find yourself really interested in it and want to buy the game so you can experience it yourself, it would be hard to stop watching just so you avoid spoilers. Story-based games are especially the games that you don’t want yourself spoiled on. The whole experience would become boring once you play the game yourself but have already seen everything because of the walkthrough.
It’s considered cheating
Some of us, like myself, don’t really care for cheating. But some gamers really get angry at the thought of cheating, mostly because they find it unfair and they’ve spent a lot of effort into their own playtime. I understand that, but at the same time people just do what they want to do, you know? Whether you consider watching a playthrough cheating or not, it’s not an excuse for people to fight over it. Fact of the matter is, games are just that. Games.
